Motherwell Football Club has appointed Alfred Johansson as their new manager ahead of their upcoming Conference League qualifiers. Johansson succeeds Berthel Askou, who departed to join French Ligue 1 club Toulouse after leading Motherwell to a fourth-place finish in the Scottish Premiership last season.

Johansson expressed enthusiasm about his new role, describing it as “a huge honour and privilege” to lead the club. He emphasized his intention to build on the previous season’s achievements, stating that the current squad is promising and that preparations will begin immediately as both European competitions and the domestic league season approach.

Chairman Kyrk Macmillan highlighted Johansson’s determination and ambition, calling him the strongest candidate to maintain the club’s progress. Johansson’s appointment marks his first managerial role in Scotland, following his tenure in Denmark with FC Copenhagen’s youth teams and his recent spell at Norwegian side Rosenborg.

During his time at Rosenborg, Johansson managed 131 games, securing 71 wins and 21 draws. Although the team finished seventh in the Eliteserien last season, a series of poor results early in his third campaign led to his departure seven matches into the season.

Motherwell, nicknamed the Steelmen, will now turn their focus to the upcoming qualifiers for the Conference League, aiming to extend their recent success under Johansson’s guidance.
