Alfreton secured a 2-1 victory over Mickleover, advancing to the next round in challenging rainy conditions. The breakthrough came early in the second half when Daniel Odunaiya capitalized on a rebound. After an initial save by Mickleover goalkeeper McDowell failed to hold the ball, Odunaiya reacted quickly to put Alfreton ahead.
Mickleover sought to respond, relying on counterattacks and creating some pressure on the visitors. Around the 60-minute mark, loanee Riley McLachlan nearly extended Alfreton’s lead following a well-constructed team move. Shortly after, Jude Taylor replaced goal-scorer Richards for Mickleover and carried the ball into the Alfreton penalty area at around the 70th minute, but his effort was thwarted by a defensive interception.
The decisive moment arrived six minutes later when McLachlan found space on the left flank. Facing defender Bencherif, McLachlan quickly curled the ball past McDowell, successfully doubling Alfreton’s advantage to 2-1. Reflecting on his goal, McLachlan said he had to act swiftly to outmaneuver the defender and goalkeeper, ensuring the shot was well-placed.
Alfreton captain Jake Buxton acknowledged the difficulty of the match, noting the adverse weather conditions and the importance of adapting their play style. “We played to the conditions, kept the ball down well enough to earn our place in the next round,” Buxton commented.
The result marks a hard-fought win for Alfreton as they progress, while Mickleover’s efforts fell short despite several promising moments against the visitors.
