Abdul Latif Jameel Motors, the official distributor of Toyota vehicles in Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation and the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY), recently concluded a five-day public trial of a hydrogen fuel cell bus in Yanbu Industrial City. The trial, which ended on April 23, was part of broader efforts to promote hydrogen as a clean energy alternative within the Kingdom’s transportation sector.
The trial deployed a hydrogen fuel cell bus equipped with Toyota’s advanced technology during the Yanbu Flower Festival, one of the city’s largest annual events. This public demonstration allowed residents and visitors to experience zero-emission transportation firsthand, highlighting the practical application of hydrogen-powered mobility in a real-world urban environment.
This initiative aligns with a memorandum of understanding between the Saudi Ministry of Energy and the RCJY aimed at accelerating the adoption of hydrogen fuel technologies across Saudi Arabia. The Yanbu trial is the latest in a series of hydrogen mobility projects undertaken by ALJ Motors and Toyota, which have included deployments and research activities in cities such as Makkah, Riyadh, and Jeddah. Collaborative research with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology has also supported these efforts by providing a scientific foundation for advancing hydrogen fuel solutions.
The primary objectives of these trials are to enhance public awareness of hydrogen technology, test the operational capabilities of fuel cell buses under various conditions, and gather data to inform future deployment strategies. The information collected is intended to demonstrate the flexibility and reliability of hydrogen buses in different geographic and urban settings throughout Saudi Arabia.
Mazin Ghazi Jameel, head of distributor businesses at ALJ Motors, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting hydrogen mobility in the Kingdom, stating the importance of such trials in collecting operational data, improving performance, and advancing Saudi Arabia’s sustainable transportation goals. Meanwhile, Toyota’s chief representative for the Middle East, Nobuyuki Takemura, noted that the trial represented a significant milestone for the company. He stressed that public demonstrations like the Yanbu deployment help build awareness and provide critical insights necessary to tailor zero-emission solutions to the local context.
Together, these efforts underscore a growing focus in Saudi Arabia on integrating hydrogen fuel technologies as part of a broader strategy to reduce emissions and foster sustainable urban mobility.
