New Zealand rugby wing Fehi Fineanganofo’s anticipated move to English Premiership club Newcastle Red Bulls has been postponed by one year to allow him to remain in New Zealand in his pursuit of selection for the 2027 Rugby World Cup squad. The 24-year-old was initially set to join Newcastle following his participation in the National Provincial Championship with Bay of Plenty. However, Fineanganofo indicated a preference to stay in New Zealand due to the All Blacks’ selection policy, which generally favors players based domestically.

Fineanganofo was originally announced as a key signing for Newcastle in January. He enjoyed a standout season with the Hurricanes, scoring 17 tries as they clinched the Super Rugby title, finishing as joint top try-scorer alongside teammate Josh Moorby. His form earned him a Test debut in July against France under head coach Dave Rennie, and he was subsequently selected for the squad to tour South Africa.

Following months of negotiations between Fineanganofo and Newcastle, the parties have reached a compromise. His two-year contract with the Premiership club will be deferred by one season, meaning he is now scheduled to play in the 2027-28 and 2028-29 campaigns. This adjustment enables Fineanganofo to continue developing and positioning himself for All Blacks selection ahead of the World Cup.

Despite the delay, Newcastle remain comfortable with their current roster and retain the capacity to recruit additional players this season, supported by available salary cap space. The club’s willingness to accommodate Fineanganofo’s ambitions reflects an understanding of the player’s priorities and the significance of All Blacks selection for his career trajectory.
