Sona Movsesian, cohost of the podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” and author of two recent books, reflected on the complexities of parenting her five-year-old twin boys, Mikey and Charlie, as they embarked on their first days of kindergarten. After months of managing full days with the twins at home, Movsesian described a mixture of relief, exhaustion, and unexpected longing as she adjusted to the new school routine.

The twins, recently transitioned out of preschool, began their kindergarten experience in Pasadena with the typical fare of backpacks and school supplies, trading summer activities like camps and family outings for a more structured academic environment. Movsesian recounted the challenges of managing the boys’ energy and attention during the summer months when her husband was at work. Despite planning activities designed to keep them engaged—such as visits to local attractions including Kidspace, the Huntington Library, Santa Anita, and the beach—she found it difficult to balance their needs alongside her professional obligations.

The author described the physical toll that caring for her energetic children took, noting that the boys often needed her constant attention and close proximity. Evenings and nights brought their own challenges, as both Mikey and Charlie frequently joined their parents’ bed, disrupting sleep patterns and personal space. Movsesian’s husband would sometimes relocate to a toddler bed to accommodate the boys, illustrating the impact on the family’s rest.

Balancing her career and family proved demanding. Movsesian is currently rebuilding a home lost to the Eaton fire, preparing for a book release, and managing her role on a popular podcast, yet her children’s needs often took precedence. Despite her initial eagerness to reclaim personal time with the start of the school year, she found herself unexpectedly missing the daily chaos and companionship of her twins.

She expressed a newfound appreciation for the moments spent with her sons, contrasting her pre-parenthood lifestyle with the joy and fulfillment derived from sharing everyday experiences with them. Movsesian emphasized the dual reality of parenting: while it brings love and joy, it also entails difficulty and sacrifice. Acknowledging this complexity, she conveyed a hopeful perspective on finding balance in the future, even as she anticipates the return of her children each afternoon.
