St Kilda’s key player Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera is entering the final year of his contract, reigniting interest from several Australian Football League clubs, including his current team and prominent South Australian contenders. The 22-year-old Glenelg product is at the center of a competitive pursuit, with clubs across and beyond South Australia expressing intent to secure his services.
A year ago, Wanganeen-Milera committed to a two-year deal with St Kilda reportedly worth $2 million per season, turning down substantial offers from both Adelaide and Port Adelaide. His decision was widely seen as a significant coup for St Kilda, underscoring the club’s ambition at the time. However, the landscape has shifted, and the prospect of a move has resurfaced as his contract approaches expiry.
Adelaide remains one of Wanganeen-Milera’s most interested suitors. After failing to acquire Brisbane’s Zac Bailey this year and with Hawthorn’s Will Day expected to re-sign, the Crows are focusing on bolstering their squad with a high-impact player. Wanganeen-Milera is regarded as the potential “big fish” who could elevate Adelaide from consistent semi-final participants to serious premiership contenders. The club reportedly has considerable salary cap flexibility to accommodate a lucrative contract, although it must also manage key players’ contracts, such as Riley Thilthorpe’s deal set to expire in 2028. Adelaide holds first-round draft picks for the coming three years, although this is less than some other clubs interested in Wanganeen-Milera.
Port Adelaide, meanwhile, is seeking to rebuild after losing midfielder Zak Butters to the Western Bulldogs. The Power had initially hoped to draft Wanganeen-Milera in 2021 and are expected to remain in the race to bring the player back to South Australia. Port’s desire to re-establish a strong presence at Alberton aligns with its pursuit of the star midfielder, despite the challenges of recent player departures.
The St Kilda situation itself is reportedly less stable than a year ago, which could influence Wanganeen-Milera’s decision. Interest from clubs beyond South Australia is also anticipated, signaling a wider market for the midfielder’s services as he evaluates his options.
As the recruitment period advances, St Kilda faces the task of convincing Wanganeen-Milera to extend his stay or risk losing one of its marquee players. Meanwhile, Adelaide and Port Adelaide are positioning themselves to capitalize on the opportunity to strengthen their lists with a player who has already demonstrated significant talent and potential at the elite level. The next several months will be critical in determining where Wanganeen-Milera will continue his AFL career.
