Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons presented a distinctive vision for Milan Fashion Week with a collection centered entirely on skirts, eschewing dresses and trousers in favor of the silhouette Prada has long championed. The show featured 63 looks, all anchored by knee-length skirts, primarily in A-line and pleated styles, highlighting Prada’s continued focus on this garment as a versatile and expressive piece.

The collaboration between Prada and Simons, now in its sixth year, has brought new energy to the luxury house. Simons noted that the concept of an all-skirt show was driven by Prada’s desire to highlight the skirt as the collection’s focal point. Prada explained her preference for skirts over dresses, emphasizing their ability to blend contrasting elements of femininity and masculinity. "A dress is all one idea, and we are never just one idea," she said, reflecting on the complex nature of personal style.

The skirts presented varied textures and patterns, including pleated leather, grey wool paired with polka-dot slips visible through side splits, and soft lemon skirts accented with black embroidered tulle. Other designs layered daisy-printed silk under sheer gauze, and the outfits often combined skirts with sweaters, shirts, or lace bras. Complementing the garments were minimalistic high heels and bare legs, reinforcing a refined yet accessible aesthetic. Simons highlighted the versatility of the skirt, noting its suitability for diverse occasions, from work to leisure.

This focus on the lower half of the ensemble marks a departure from typical fashion narratives that draw attention to the upper body through bold slogans or dramatic necklines. Prada described the skirt as an ideal canvas for conveying ideas without overshadowing the wearer’s face or voice, likening it to how others might use a T-shirt for self-expression.

Meanwhile, Milan Fashion Week saw other notable developments within the broader Prada Group. Prada now owns Versace, and although there was no Versace runway show this season, Donatella Versace announced plans for a new brand launch. Partnering with California-based Revolve Inc, Versace intends to introduce a line of beauty products next year, with fashion offerings to follow. Versace, who stepped down from her family brand last year, commands a significant social media presence with over 12 million followers on Instagram. Pieter Mulier, the brand’s new designer formerly of Alaïa, is expected to headline Versace’s runway debut in a subsequent season.

This season’s emphasis on skirts at Prada underscores the continued evolution of Milan Fashion Week, balancing heritage and innovation amid shifting creative dynamics in the global fashion industry.
