As the darker evenings of late autumn settle in, the Alnwick Garden in Northumberland is preparing to launch what it has described as its most dazzling festive season to date. The award-winning attraction has unveiled its Christmas programme, featuring the return of a Winter Light Trail alongside an expanded visit with Father Christmas.
The Winter Light Trail will open to visitors on November 20 and continue through January 3. The garden’s grounds will be transformed with illuminated installations and decorations designed to brighten the space after dark. Families will be welcomed by festive decorations along the entrance pathway before stepping into a sensory experience that includes a seasonal soundscape and a variety of food and activities.
Central to this year’s festivities is the Lilidorei play village, which will also open on November 20. The grotto, where visitors can meet Father Christmas and his elves, will offer increased booking availability to accommodate greater demand. Father Christmas will remain in residence until Christmas Eve, with opportunities for families to arrange festive breakfasts in his company.
The festive programming at Lilidorei will begin slightly earlier, from November 16, offering storytime sessions, elf-led workshops, a nutcracker-themed trail, and a forest display featuring approximately 1,500 Christmas trees. Apart from family-focused events, adults can take part in various seasonal offerings, including a wreath-making class on November 27 and a festive makeup masterclass on November 29 led by Charlotte Tilbury.
Additional highlights include the Alnwick Garden Christmas Fair scheduled for the weekend of November 21-22. On December 10 and 17, the venue will host a seasonal Feast in The Pavilion, featuring live performances by local singer Amy Greer and views over the Grand Cascade waterfall. The restaurant is also set to serve a festive menu, with afternoon tea among the offerings.
Mark Brassell, chief executive officer of The Alnwick Garden, emphasized the team’s efforts to create a memorable festive experience. He noted the special atmosphere that arrives with the darkening nights and the anticipation of Christmas. “From November, the whole attraction will be completely transformed,” he said, highlighting the garden’s extensive lighting and decoration plans, including an illuminated Christmas tree forest in Lilidorei.
Brassell added that the Winter Light Trail had become a cherished seasonal tradition, with the garden staff continually striving to enhance its magical appeal each year.
