Tyson Philpot, wide receiver for the Montreal Alouettes, is nearing a longstanding Canadian Football League (CFL) record as the team prepares for a Saturday night game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Philpot needs 135 receiving yards in the upcoming matchup to surpass Terry Evanshen’s single-season Canadian receiving yards mark of 1,662, set in 1967 with the Calgary Stampeders.
Selected ninth overall in the 2022 CFL draft, the 26-year-old from Delta, British Columbia, has shown strong potential throughout his career, but previous seasons were frequently cut short due to injuries. This year, however, Philpot has played in all 14 games to date and currently leads the CFL with 1,528 receiving yards—nearly double his previous best—and has scored 12 touchdowns.
Philpot attributed his breakthrough performance to a renewed dedication to his physical conditioning and preparation. “I really feel like I was determined this off-season, I put my best foot forward coming into the year and had one of the best training camps in my career,” he said ahead of the game at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium.
Alouettes head coach Jason Maas praised Philpot’s growth since taking over in 2023, noting the receiver’s increasing impact on the field. “He’s just grown and grown and grown,” Maas said. “Starting in training camp from day one until now, we’ve seen the evolution and the playmaking ability.”
Receivers coach Michael Lionello highlighted Philpot’s skill after the catch as a distinguishing feature. Drawing a comparison to Philpot’s father, Cory, a former CFL running back in the 1990s, Lionello said, “He’s almost a running back after the catch… He’s just so physical and so violent, and really he’s fearless out there.” Philpot leads the league with 672 yards gained after the catch, 169 more than the next closest player.
Cory Philpot noted that his son’s success is also rooted in preparation and studying opponents. “Tyson understands the person he’s playing against. He studies them,” Cory said, emphasizing his son’s approach to game film and opponent tendencies.
Montreal, currently holding an 11-3 record, could secure first place in the East Division with a victory, provided the Toronto Argonauts lose their earlier game against the BC Lions. Winnipeg enters the contest at 7-7 and is competing for playoff positioning in a closely contested West Division.
The Blue Bombers defeated the Alouettes 44-28 in an August game in Winnipeg and boast the league’s best defense against the pass, allowing just 273.4 yards per game. Beyond Evanshen’s Canadian record, Philpot also has the potential to challenge Allen Pitts’s overall CFL single-season receiving yards record of 2,036. He has surpassed 130 receiving yards in five games this season, underscoring his ability to continue producing at a high level.
