Altrincham secured a 2-1 victory over Yeovil Town at Huish Park on Saturday, a result that propelled them above the Glovers in the National League standings. The visitors overcame an early deficit with late goals from Charlie Kirk and Kristian Dennis, demonstrating resilience against an in-form Yeovil side.
Yeovil took the lead in the 14th minute when Johl Powell capitalized on a mistake by former Glovers defender Otis Khan, skillfully holding off his marker to score into the bottom corner. Despite this early breakthrough, Altrincham maintained composure and continued to apply pressure throughout the match. Their persistence paid off in the 69th minute when Kirk finished off a close-range effort following a cross from Farrell.
The winning goal came in the 85th minute under challenging conditions, as a cross carried by strong gusts of wind was mishandled by Yeovil goalkeeper Jos Barker. The ball struck the crossbar, allowing Dennis to poke it home from close range. Yeovil’s efforts to respond were further hindered when Ben Radcliffe received a red card late in the game for a last-man foul, leaving the hosts to finish with ten men.
Yeovil manager Billy Rowley acknowledged the impact of the difficult weather conditions on his team’s game plan. “It was a game of two halves, literally,” he said, noting the challenges posed by 50 mph winds that forced tactical adjustments. Despite the loss, Rowley expressed disappointment in the result, feeling his side had chances to secure a positive outcome.
Altrincham’s manager Neil Gibson praised his squad’s determination, describing the win as a hard-fought success against a strong opponent. “We knew we’d have to be at our best to get anything against an in-form side and had to show immense character,” he said. Gibson emphasized the importance of fighting for every point in the competitive National League environment.
The match saw both teams create chances, with notable saves from Altrincham goalkeeper Harry Isted denying Yeovil forwards on several occasions. The spirited contest was played before a crowd of 3,120 and marked a significant boost for Altrincham’s ambitions.
Meanwhile, in another National League fixture, Wealdstone secured a 1-0 victory against Aldershot Town, maintaining their unbeaten streak over four matches. Olufela Olomola scored the decisive goal early in the second half with a header from a corner. Aldershot struggled to convert opportunities despite dominating possession and chances, a frustrating pattern manager Scott Davies attributed to a lack of creativity and finishing.
Davies acknowledged the need to strengthen his squad, identifying the absence of a natural attacking midfielder as a contributing factor to his team’s inability to forge more clear-cut chances. “We need to rejig and reshape the squad – a couple of players will be departing, and we need to liven it up,” he said.
Wealdstone’s defense held firm, earning their third clean sheet of the season as they demonstrated tactical discipline under manager Gary Waddock, who earned bragging rights against his former mentor. The win added valuable points for Wealdstone as they continue to push for a strong campaign.
