The third Aluminium Scrap Recycling Symposium in Oman emphasized the need for accelerated development of an integrated aluminium recycling ecosystem to support the country’s circular economy goals. The event, organised by Sohar Aluminium in partnership with the Environment Authority, convened policymakers, industry leaders, and technical experts to explore ways to enhance recycling efforts throughout the aluminium value chain.
Held under the patronage of Dr. Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, the symposium highlighted the importance of coordinated action to improve the collection, processing, and reuse of aluminium scrap. Engineered by a call for greater collaboration, the discussions focused on building a cohesive system involving all stakeholders to maximize resource efficiency and environmental benefits.
Engineer Said bin Mohammed al Masoudi, CEO of Sohar Aluminium, noted that the sector has made significant strides, with the company recycling more than 8,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap to date. According to him, these recycling efforts have contributed to both economic gains and improved environmental performance. However, Al Masoudi stressed that further progress depends on collective engagement rather than isolated initiatives, advocating a comprehensive approach that integrates every stage of the value chain—from collection and logistics to advanced processing and manufacturing.
The symposium also underscored the need for transparent dialogue regarding the challenges faced by the industry, suggesting that partnerships among regulators, service providers, and end users are essential to unlock the full potential of national resources. Regional and local experts contributed insights aimed at aligning Oman's recycling practices with international standards and best practices, while tailoring them to national objectives.
Key topics addressed included the enhancement of regulatory frameworks, adoption of technological innovations, and promotion of cross-sector collaboration. These areas were identified as pivotal enablers for creating a more efficient and sustainable aluminium recycling sector in Oman.
Overall, the event reinforced Oman’s commitment to advancing its circular economy by fostering a robust aluminium recycling ecosystem that balances economic development with environmental stewardship.
