Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez is set to return to the boxing ring after a 13-month absence, aiming to reclaim a world title in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Guadalajara-born fighter will challenge undefeated World Boxing Council (WBC) super-middleweight champion Christian Mbilli in a bout scheduled for the seventh edition of Riyadh Season.

Álvarez, whose professional record stands at 63 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws with 39 knockouts, arrives in Saudi Arabia following a period marked by elbow surgery and a significant defeat. In September 2025, he lost his four super-middleweight titles to Terence Crawford, who subsequently retired. Mbilli, with an unblemished record of 29 wins and 1 draw and 24 knockouts, has since ascended from interim to full WBC champion. He has yet to face an opponent of Álvarez’s caliber.

The fight, part of the “Mexico vs. The World” event, will take place at The Venue in Riyadh and will be broadcast on pay-per-view through DAZN, beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific time, with the main event projected around 1:10 p.m.

Álvarez’s return comes amid unusual challenges surrounding sporting events in the region. The boxing card has been disrupted by the cancellation of a fight due to security concerns voiced by one of the participants. Additionally, several prominent international sporting competitions, including Formula One, Women’s Tennis Association events, and WWE shows, have faced postponements or relocations attributed to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. These developments have raised questions about athlete safety and the viability of hosting major sports events in the region.

Despite these complications, Álvarez’s presence underscores his intention to continue competing at the highest level despite the physical toll of age and injury. Beyond his immediate opponent, the 33-year-old faces the broader challenge of maintaining elite performance in a sport where time is an adversary as formidable as any rival.

The bout in Riyadh will provide a critical test for both fighters: Álvarez seeking to restore his standing among boxing’s elite and Mbilli aiming to prove his championship credentials against a globally recognized contender.
