In the heart of Kibera, Nairobi’s expansive informal settlement, a new community library has opened its doors, offering residents a dedicated space for learning and growth. The Amani Kibera Book House, inaugurated on June 27, was developed through a collaboration between Condition_Lab, an architectural research studio linked to the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Kenya’s Kounkuey Design Initiative. Its name, derived from the Swahili word for peace, embodies the community’s aspirations for education and opportunity.

The facility fills a significant gap in the area’s educational resources. Before the launch, Kibera had only a modest reading center constructed from temporary materials, which was often closed due to safety issues. The new library, constructed with active community participation, offers a safe, welcoming environment that supports literacy and learning.

Local residents played a vital role in shaping the project from design to construction. Community input helped ensure the library addressed the specific needs of its users. The architectural team prioritized features such as natural lighting, ventilation, and the use of locally available materials to create a sustainable, comfortable space integrated into the neighborhood’s daily life.

Among those who visited the newly opened library was 17-year-old Paul Muhoro, an aspiring doctor. He expressed hope that the resources available would help him achieve his goal of supporting the health needs of his community. Another young visitor, Lindsay, a secondary school student with ambitions of becoming a lawyer, found inspiration in the library’s collection of science-fiction novels and other books. Both described the library as a vital resource and a personal motivator.

Liu Ziwei of Condition_Lab recounted that when the team first engaged with the Kibera community in 2022, they immediately recognized the children’s eagerness to learn despite the challenging environment. This motivation fueled their commitment to creating a space that is not only functional but also deeply connected to its surroundings.

Ben Ooko, founder of the local organization Amani Kibera, characterized the library as a beacon of hope for the neighborhood. He stressed that education remains a critical means of transforming lives, offering children an opportunity to access knowledge and ideas beyond their immediate environment. The new facility, he said, rejuvenates the community’s confidence and strengthens their belief in a future worth striving for.

By providing improved facilities and fostering a culture of reading, the Amani Kibera Book House aims to serve as a vital link between Kibera and the wider world, promoting learning and empowerment for some of Nairobi’s most disadvantaged residents.
