Amazon MGM Studios has initiated the search for a new actor to take on the role of James Bond, marking the franchise’s transition to its seventh lead following Daniel Craig’s departure. The casting process began in recent weeks as the company prepares for a sequel to 2021’s No Time to Die.
The studio confirmed that auditions are underway but declined to provide specific details at this stage. Nina Gold, a prominent casting director known for her work on The Crown, Game of Thrones, and the Star Wars saga, is spearheading the search.
Industry insiders indicate that the role is expected to be filled by a younger actor, signaling a shift from Craig, who was 51 when filming concluded on his final Bond installment. Among the names reportedly in contention are Jacob Elordi, 28, known for his performances in Saltburn and Wuthering Heights, and Callum Turner, 36, with credits including Apple TV’s Masters of the Air and the Fantastic Beasts series. Irish actor Aidan Turner, 42, recognized for Poldark and The Hobbit, is also considered a potential candidate.
There has been speculation about Idris Elba, 53, becoming the first Black actor to portray 007. However, some Hollywood sources suggest this is unlikely, citing a preference to cast a younger performer and the extended wait for casting news as factors diminishing the possibility.
The forthcoming Bond film is not expected to premiere before 2027. The project will be helmed by director Denis Villeneuve, acclaimed for his work on the Dune series, with a screenplay by Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders. Knight described the script development as progressing very well and expressed confidence that audiences will respond positively once the film is released.
Producers Amy Pascal, known for her involvement in the Spider-Man franchise, and David Heyman, associated with the Harry Potter series, are leading production efforts on the new installment.
Despite the extended hiatus since the last release, industry figures remain optimistic about the franchise’s enduring popularity, emphasizing the lasting demand for James Bond globally.
