Amazon is facing growing competition from emerging artificial intelligence (AI) shopping agents that offer consumers new ways to discover and purchase products but are currently blocked from directly accessing Amazon’s platform. These AI tools, such as Muse, enable users to browse and buy items in novel formats, challenging Amazon’s established role as the primary gateway for online shopping.
During a recent discussion, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged the company’s expectation to collaborate with "horizontal agents" in the future while underscoring the prominence of Amazon’s own AI assistant, Alexa for Shopping. Serving more than 400 million users, Alexa offers capabilities including product research, deal tracking, and personalized gift recommendations. Despite the widespread adoption of Alexa, Jassy conceded that external AI agents have yet to deliver a more seamless or superior shopping experience compared to established retailer websites.
Nevertheless, the rise of independent AI shopping tools presents a growing threat to Amazon’s dominance over the e-commerce customer journey. Rival retailers such as Walmart and Shopify have actively embraced AI agents, partnering with companies like Meta to integrate these technologies and reach consumers through new interfaces. In contrast, Amazon has maintained a protective stance by restricting outside AI agents’ access to its marketplace.
Industry analysts and former Amazon employees highlight that this restrictive approach has created opportunities for startups to develop alternative shopping platforms, potentially eroding Amazon’s market share. There is ongoing debate about whether Amazon might eventually pursue partnerships or agreements with AI agent providers to safeguard its position.
The evolving AI landscape is prompting Amazon to reassess its business strategy amid shifting consumer behaviors and advances in AI-driven commerce. As AI shopping agents gain traction, Amazon faces the challenge of adapting its services and partnerships to remain the central destination for online shoppers in an increasingly competitive environment.
