Malaysia’s men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Asian Games badminton tournament after falling to China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium in Aichi, Japan. The defeat on September 29 ended Malaysia’s hopes of securing a gold medal in the event.

The Malaysian duo lost 13-21, 17-21 in a match where they were unable to perform at their usual level. Despite the setback, their independent doubles coach, Ameer Amri Zainuddin, acknowledged the players' efforts against the world No. 3 Chinese pair. "Of course, I’m disappointed with the result because we came here with the target of winning a medal," Ameer said. "But credit must be given to the players because they gave their best."

Ameer, who recently assumed the head coach role of the independent team based in Sri Petaling following Teo Kok Siang’s return to the Badminton Association of Malaysia, took full responsibility for the outcome. He noted the team would learn from the loss and aim to come back stronger in future competitions. Efforts to strengthen the coaching staff included bringing in former national player Fairuzizuan Tazari, although Fairuzizuan was not present during the Asian Games campaign.

The quarter-final exit also meant Malaysia no longer had representation in the men’s doubles draw, following the earlier second-round defeat of Aaron Chia and Tee Kai Wun by South Korea’s defending champions Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae. The Malaysian pairs had been considered strong contenders for the gold medal, with hopes of ending the nation’s two-decade gold medal drought in men’s doubles since Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong’s victory at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

The outcome marks a disappointing conclusion to Malaysia’s campaign in the men’s doubles event, placing renewed focus on rebuilding and preparation for upcoming international tournaments.
