Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has emerged as a candidate to take over at AC Milan, following the Italian club’s recent dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri. AC Milan parted ways with Allegri after failing to secure qualification for the Champions League, prompting a search for a new head coach.

Amorim, who was sacked by Manchester United in January after a challenging 14-month tenure, has reportedly held discussions with AC Milan officials. The 41-year-old Portuguese coach left United after finishing 15th in his debut season and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. Since his departure, Amorim has maintained a low profile and has not publicly commented on his time at Old Trafford. Reports indicate he received a £10 million severance package, bringing the total cost to Manchester United for his hiring and firing close to £27 million.

AC Milan’s interest in Amorim stems from his teams’ aggressive playing style and focus on quickly regaining possession, attributes the club finds promising for their future direction. Amorim was previously considered for the role before AC Milan appointed Paulo Fonseca in June 2024 but ultimately was not selected at that time.

Other candidates in the running include former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Matthias Jaissle, currently with Al Ahli, both of whom have engaged in talks with Milan but have yet to reach an agreement. Additionally, Ralf Rangnick, another ex-United manager, has been interviewed for the club’s director of football position.

After Amorim’s departure, Michael Carrick took over as interim head coach at Manchester United, later securing a two-year contract after leading the team to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification. AC Milan’s decision on their next head coach is expected in the coming days as the club aims to rebound from a disappointing season.
