Veteran talk show host Arsenio Hall recently shared an intimate pre-show ritual he maintained with the late poet and author Maya Angelou during her appearances on his popular late-night program. Hall disclosed on the SiriusXM podcast "Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend" that Angelou, despite her renowned poise and eloquence, would experience significant nervousness before going on air and would often seek a calming beverage.

According to Hall, the tradition began when a talent coordinator alerted him that Angelou desired "a little toddy to relax her" before her segment. Anticipating her request, Hall recalled Angelou subsequently knocking on his dressing room door. "Hi baby, can we talk for a minute?" she reportedly asked, before being offered a drink by Hall.

The comedian explained that due to network regulations, liquor was typically not permitted in the green room areas designated for guests. However, Hall maintained a personal supply in his own private space. This initial shared drink, intended to alleviate Angelou's pre-show jitters, evolved into a cherished routine.

Hall described how the ritual became a staple whenever Angelou was scheduled to appear as a guest on "The Arsenio Hall Show." He detailed the private moment they would share, having "a little sip together" before stepping out for the live broadcast. Hall emphasized that the practice served to relax not only Angelou but also himself. The revelation offers a glimpse into the human side of a literary icon and the behind-the-scenes dynamics of a prominent talk show.
