Canadian tennis players Bianca Andreescu and Katherine Sebov advanced to the final round of Wimbledon qualifying on Wednesday, edging closer to securing spots in the women’s singles main draw amid heat-related delays at the All England Club.

Andreescu, a former world No. 4 from Mississauga, overcame a first-set loss to defeat Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. After twice reaching the third round of Wimbledon’s main draw in previous years, Andreescu fell in the second round of qualifying last year. She will next face Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus for a place in the tournament proper.

Sebov, from Toronto, also moved nearer to a second Grand Slam main draw appearance. She was a late addition to Wimbledon qualifying following the withdrawal of Guiomar Maristany Zuleta de Reales just before the start of the tournament. Sebov rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the final set to defeat Germany’s Noma Noha Akugue 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. Her upcoming opponent will be Russia’s Iryna Shymanovich.

On the men’s side, Quebec’s Alexis Galarneau was eliminated in the second round of qualifying, losing 7-5, 6-2 to Britain’s Oliver Tarvet. Tarvet, who entered the tournament with a wild card, also defeated Galarneau in last year’s second round of Wimbledon qualifying.

Wednesday’s qualifying matches experienced delays due to extreme heat conditions in London, with temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius. In response to the heat warnings, ball boys and girls were not utilized on the courts. Instead, the All England Club deployed its Court Services team, consisting entirely of adult staff members, to fulfill these roles.

The United Kingdom’s weather service has forecast that temperatures could rise as high as 40 degrees Celsius in the region, accompanied by high humidity over the coming days. Cooler conditions are expected to return in time for the start of the main draw later this week.
