Trainer Andrew Balding is poised for a potentially landmark weekend in British and European flat racing, with two standout runners competing in prestigious Group 1 events.
On Saturday at Newmarket, Balding will saddle Blue Bolt as the heavy favourite in the Sun Chariot Stakes. The filly, priced at 4-9 in the betting, aims to secure her fourth consecutive Group 1 victory. Balding praised Blue Bolt’s durability throughout the season, noting her busy campaign since early May and her consistent high-level performance despite the usual concerns about fillies losing form. A win on Saturday would put Balding close to matching Aidan O’Brien in the trainers’ championship, a significant achievement given the level of competition this season.
Blue Bolt’s impressive form has made her the horse to beat in the one-mile fillies’ and mares’ contest, and Balding expressed confidence in her prospects. He reflected on last year’s close calls, when his runners finished second in three Group 1 contests — the Sun Chariot, the Cadran, and the Prix de l’Opéra at ParisLongchamp — suggesting that turning those near misses into victories would be a major step forward for his stable.
Looking ahead to Sunday, Balding’s chances of further success rest heavily on Kalpana, who will contest the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp. The five-year-old mare has shown significant improvement this season, highlighted by a victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last July, where she defeated male competitors. She followed that up with a hard-fought win in the Yorkshire Oaks, confirming her status as a top-level contender.
Balding noted that Kalpana appears to be in excellent condition, having had a light refresh after her demanding race at York. He emphasized her adaptability to varying track conditions, dispelling earlier assumptions that she preferred soft ground, as she has performed well on firmer turf throughout the summer. With a favourable draw much anticipated, Balding considers Kalpana a serious contender for one of Europe’s most prestigious races.
This weekend’s events offer Balding the chance to enhance an already strong season, with success at Newmarket and Paris potentially cementing his status among the leading trainers in the sport.
