Andy Burnham’s former English teacher has revealed that he initially hesitated to apply to Cambridge University because he doubted his own suitability for the prestigious institution. Stephen Harrington, who taught Burnham during his time at St Aelred’s Catholic High School in Newton-Le-Willows, Merseyside, said the future politician needed considerable encouragement to submit an application.

According to Harrington, Burnham expressed a belief that Cambridge was reserved for others, telling him, “I know that’s not for people like me.” Despite these reservations, Burnham ultimately took his teacher’s advice and applied, later earning a 2:1 degree in English literature from Cambridge.

Burnham’s academic journey has been highlighted as a formative chapter in his career, reinforcing a narrative of perseverance and overcoming self-doubt. He is currently viewed by some as a leading contender for the role of Prime Minister, making the story of his early educational challenges particularly notable. Harrington’s reflections provide insight into the determination behind Burnham’s progression from a student uncertain of his prospects to a prominent public figure.
