Andy Robertson has acknowledged that Tottenham Hotspur continue to struggle under the weight of poor form over the past two seasons, including a close brush with relegation last year. Currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table with only two points and two goals from five matches, Spurs have yet to secure a victory this campaign despite significant investment and a promising end to last season.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, the Scotland captain highlighted the lingering impact of recent disappointing finishes, describing them as a heavy burden on the squad’s confidence and performance. Tottenham endured back-to-back 17th-place finishes, and though head coach Roberto De Zerbi appeared to spark revival toward the end of last season, the progress has not continued. This summer, the club invested nearly £400 million on new players, with Robertson among 10 additions to the squad. However, early results have been poorer than last year’s start under De Zerbi, when Spurs collected 11 points from seven games.
Robertson emphasized the need to move beyond the setbacks, calling for a fresh focus within the team as well as among supporters, who have also endured a difficult period. “We need to forget,” he said, expressing optimism that a first win could serve as a turning point. The club recently suffered an early exit from the Carabao Cup, underscoring the depth of their current challenges. Despite the results, Robertson sees positive signs in the determination and potential within the squad.
The 32-year-old defender joined Tottenham on a free transfer from Liverpool during the summer, having resisted a mid-season move in January when Spurs first approached him. He credited conversations with De Zerbi over the summer for convincing him to take the step, describing the coach as highly ambitious and focused on building a competitive, trophy-winning team. Both manager and player acknowledge that improvement will take time but stress the importance of demonstrating progress sooner rather than later.
Robertson remains confident in the quality of the squad and the vision set out by De Zerbi, stressing the need for collective effort and a bit of fortune. “We just need a little bit of luck and we need a little bit more of forgetting about the past,” he said, adding that as the season unfolds, Tottenham are poised to get better and start to fulfill their potential.
