Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool at the conclusion of the 2025-2026 season, ending a nine-year tenure at the Premier League club, Liverpool confirmed on Wednesday. The 32-year-old left-back, who has made 373 appearances for the Reds, will not have his contract renewed as he has fallen behind in the squad hierarchy this term following the arrival of Milos Kerkez.
Robertson, the captain of Scotland, played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s rise under manager Jürgen Klopp, contributing to two Premier League titles and the 2019 Champions League victory, among other trophies. His achievements with the club also include an FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Signed from relegated Hull City in 2017 for a reported fee of £8 million ($11 million), Robertson soon became a key player and fan favorite at Anfield, ranking second only to fellow defender Trent Alexander-Arnold for the most assists by a Premier League defender. Throughout his time at the club, he has been widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in European football.
This season, Liverpool have experienced a significant downturn in form. The team currently sits fifth in the Premier League and has been knocked out of the FA Cup following a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City. On the European front, Liverpool faces an uphill task after a 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. Off the pitch, the club has also been touched by tragedy, mourning the death of Robertson’s close friend and teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in July.
Robertson expressed mixed emotions about his departure, reflecting on his time at Liverpool as a period of personal and professional growth. “I’ll always look back on amazing memories at this football club. I’ve put my heart and soul into the club for nine years and I’ve not got many regrets,” he said. He added that despite the farewell, his focus remains on helping the team finish the season strongly and providing fans with positive moments.
His departure follows that of Mohamed Salah, who also confirmed he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, marking a period of notable transition for the club as it seeks to rebuild and regain its competitive edge.
