Anfal Alkandari, a Kuwaiti-Bahraini poet residing in Saar, has self-published her debut poetry collection, *When The Soul Turns*, compiling 70 poems that chronicle her personal journey through crisis and renewal. The 33-year-old writer’s work reflects on the emotional aftermath of her recent divorce and explores themes of transformation, self-awareness, and love.
Alkandari structured her book as a three-part experience, divided into the sections Metamorphosis, Self-Discovery, and Love. She describes the collection as an intentional progression intended to guide readers through the process of embracing change, uncovering unconscious aspects of the self, and ultimately choosing love as a fundamental state of being. The poems span the duration of her marriage, its dissolution, and the subsequent rebirth she describes.
“Being married for five years and going through divorce is a metamorphosis and a rebirth,” Alkandari said in an interview. She noted that writing the book itself was a transformative process, allowing her to observe her evolving artistic voice. Reflecting on the completed work, she recognized a maturity in her poetry that emerged over time, describing it as a validation of her personal experience rather than an attempt to seek connection through shared pain.
The collection is enhanced by illustrations from Syrian artist and architect Haidar Alhaibe, adding a visual dimension to Alkandari’s introspective journey. Her creative process blends spontaneous inspiration with disciplined journaling, often fueled by new experiences and immersion in diverse environments. She credits her involvement in a writing community with helping maintain focus and encouraging growth.
Although Alkandari received offers to publish the book through companies in the UK and UAE, she chose to self-publish. Her decision led her to confront challenges prevalent in the publishing industry, including potential scams targeting authors. She cited resources such as writerbeware.blog, a site dedicated to raising awareness about trustworthy and predatory publishing practices.
*When The Soul Turns* is available for purchase through Alkandari’s Instagram account, @anfalkay. The poet’s work contributes to contemporary Gulf literary voices by candidly addressing themes of emotional upheaval and personal evolution.
