Pro-Palestinian protests in central London marking the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack in Israel resulted in multiple arrests, according to the Metropolitan Police. Demonstrations took place outside the Jewish Board of Deputies and included a student march and a counterprotest.
Authorities detained five individuals at the demonstration outside the Jewish Board of Deputies on charges including inciting racial hatred. Police noted that some protesters were wearing face coverings, which are prohibited at public protests, and reported that chants calling for an “intifada” were heard. An additional six arrests were made during the student march and the related counterprotest, with five of those individuals taken into custody for breaching protest conditions. Among those arrested, one was charged with failing to remove a face covering, while another faced a charge of common assault.
The Metropolitan Police had sought to have the protests shut down ahead of the events but stated none of the gatherings reached the criteria necessary for the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, to impose a ban. Senior government officials had urged the organisers to postpone the demonstrations, but their efforts were declined.
In response to the unrest, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham addressed the recent rise in antisemitic incidents across the United Kingdom over the past three years. In a message aimed at the Jewish community, Burnham affirmed the government’s stance against abuse and violence in all forms, emphasizing that such behavior would not be tolerated in public spaces, online platforms, schools, or universities.
The protests followed a series of heightened tensions related to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with pro-Palestinian demonstrators calling attention to concerns over Israeli policies, while opposition groups and community leaders expressed worry over the increase in antisemitic expressions. Law enforcement agencies maintained a visible presence throughout the demonstrations to manage crowd safety and prevent escalation.
As investigations into the incidents continue, authorities have called for calm and dialogue to address the underlying issues fueling the demonstrations and community divisions.
