The ashes of renowned Hong Kong singer Anita Mui have been missing from Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island for nearly three months, her family confirmed. Mui, a celebrated Cantopop icon who passed away from cervical cancer in 2003 at the age of 40, had her remains interred at the monastery, a site that has drawn many fans over the years.
According to reports, visitors paying tribute to Mui discovered on July 18 that her urn was no longer at its resting place. They promptly informed Mui’s family, who subsequently filed a police report. A police spokesman later confirmed receipt of the report, describing it as a case involving a suspected missing item at the Lantau Island monastery.
Despite ongoing investigations, the ashes have not been recovered. On October 10, a statement issued by Mui’s family—coinciding with what would have been her 63rd birthday—expressed their deep distress over the lack of progress. They also appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the ashes’ return.
Peter Mui Kai Ming, Anita Mui’s brother, has offered a HK$50,000 (approximately S$8,150) reward for helpful tips. Peter has recently been in the public eye following a family dispute related to their mother, Tam Mei Kam, who passed away on August 30 at age 102. Reports indicate that Peter was excluded from her funeral arrangements, which were managed by his nephew. Peter has publicly threatened legal action against his nephew over the funeral management and police authorities regarding the handling of their mother’s possessions.
The incident involving Anita Mui’s ashes has added to the family’s ongoing distress as authorities and relatives seek resolution. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance while calling on anyone with knowledge to come forward.
