A 21-year-old man died following a collision involving an electric bicycle in Huntington Beach on July 21, officials reported. The incident occurred at the intersection of Warner Avenue and Plaza Lane when the e-bike rider, traveling westbound on Warner Avenue, lost control and crashed. Emergency responders found the rider unconscious on the sidewalk and transported him to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

The Huntington Beach Police Department has not released further details regarding the circumstances of the crash. Authorities continue to investigate and have urged any witnesses to contact traffic investigator Vishal Rattanchandani at (714) 536-5231.

This fatal accident follows another recent e-bike death earlier this month in Camarillo, highlighting a concerning trend in electric bicycle incidents. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, analyzed data from the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System and found that e-bike riders were involved in at least 4,035 collisions across California from 2018 through 2024. Their study indicates that injuries sustained in e-bike crashes tend to be more severe than those involving traditional bicycles.

The investigation also revealed that in the majority of e-bike accidents, the rider was determined to be at fault. This data has prompted discussions about e-bike regulations. In April, a panel of the Los Angeles City Council's Arts, Parks, Libraries and Community Enrichment Committee unanimously voted to propose a ban on e-bikes from local trails. The proposal awaits consideration by the full council.

As e-bikes continue to grow in popularity throughout California, officials are seeking to balance increased usage with public safety concerns.
