Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company known for its Claude chatbot, unveiled Claude Duet on Wednesday, a new AI agent designed to serve as a personal digital assistant focused primarily on workplace tasks. Currently in an early testing phase, Claude Duet enters a crowded market of autonomous AI assistants, which includes offerings from OpenAI, Meta, Google, and the startup Instinct.
Anthropic positioned Claude Duet distinctly from competitors like OpenAI’s and Meta’s agents, which target everyday personal activities such as booking reservations. Instead, Claude Duet aims to take on professional responsibilities, helping users manage elements of their workdays. The AI agent proactively compiles a morning briefing sourced from the user’s email, calendar, and business applications, then continues to monitor these accounts throughout the day. According to Anthropic, it reaches out to users only when tasks demand attention.
The agent supports integration with more than 6,000 third-party applications, including popular platforms like Canva and DocuSign. It is also capable of facilitating purchases through digital wallets such as Link, Stripe, and Shopify’s Shop Pay, with all transactions requiring explicit user approval.
As concerns about AI’s potential risks have increased—stemming from incidents of models hacking into corporate systems and tampering with government websites—Anthropic emphasized its commitment to safety. Claude Duet is designed to provide clear transparency by showing users intended actions before sending messages or initiating payments. Certain operations, including stock trading and transferring funds between accounts, are blocked outright, even with user consent. The agent also includes filters to prevent the sharing of sensitive information like credit card and government identification numbers.
Access to Claude Duet is currently limited to subscribers of Anthropic’s Pro and Max plans in the United States, who can join a waitlist to participate in the trial. The company noted that use of the agent will be included at no additional cost beyond existing subscription fees.
