Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence company, has indicated to investors that it expects to be profitable this quarter, aiming to alleviate concerns over the high cash burn typical of frontier AI firms ahead of its initial public offering (IPO). The company, which develops the Claude AI model, disclosed to a select group of shareholders that its adjusted operating income would remain positive for the second quarter in a row. This adjusted figure excludes costs such as stock-based compensation, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
The company reported gross margins exceeding 80 percent before accounting for revenue sharing with partners like Amazon and the expenses related to training its AI models. Achieving sustained profitability would mark a significant milestone for the five-year-old firm as it prepares for a high-profile IPO.
Anthropic has chosen Nasdaq as the venue for its public listing, which insiders say could value the company at $2 trillion or more. Although originally expected to reveal its IPO prospectus last week, the company instead provided documents to a limited group of investors and plans to address their questions before making the information public.
The IPO is unfolding amid heightened scrutiny of the AI industry, which is experiencing rapid technological advancements alongside growing concerns over environmental impact, job displacement, and broader societal risks. On Saturday, Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, publicly advocated for a slowdown in AI development to address these challenges.
Anthropic, currently valued at $965 billion, saw its revenues soar 14-fold year-on-year to $11.5 billion in the second quarter. By the end of July, the company had reached an annualized revenue run rate of $65 billion, up dramatically from $9 billion at the close of 2025.
Industry analysts view Anthropic’s combination of rapid growth and strong margins as a formidable competitive advantage. Joey Brookhart, an AI analyst at SemiAnalysis, commented that maintaining such performance levels would make it difficult for competitors to keep pace given Anthropic’s substantial computing resources.
As Anthropic navigates its IPO amid these financial milestones and sector-wide uncertainties, investors will closely monitor how the company balances profitability, scaling, and the broader implications of AI technology.
