Anthropic has entered into a $35 billion agreement with Lambda, a U.S.-based startup backed by Nvidia, to secure cloud computing resources essential for advancing its artificial intelligence (AI) operations. The deal, which spans six years, marks the latest in a series of substantial contracts the San Francisco-based AI developer has pursued amid intense competition for access to high-performance computing infrastructure.

Lambda, headquartered in San Jose, California, specializes in AI cloud computing services and will provide Anthropic with computing capacity at a data center currently under construction by Hut 8, a company known for bitcoin mining and data center development. This facility, located in Texas, is expected to become a critical hub for Anthropic’s computing needs. Nvidia, an investor in both Anthropic and Lambda, will lease the data center from Hut 8, with Lambda subsequently paying Nvidia for access rights.

This arrangement follows a similar six-year deal Anthropic finalized with Nscale, a London-based cloud provider, valued at $45 billion. This contract grants access to a facility in West Virginia, further expanding Anthropic’s computing capabilities. Collectively, Anthropic has secured agreements totaling at least $135 billion in 2026 alone as it competes with rival AI entity OpenAI for customers and market share. Both companies are rapidly scaling their operations and moving toward initial public offerings.

The surge in demand for advanced chips and computing power driven by AI development is impacting broader supply chains. Industries across the board are feeling the pressure, including consumer electronics makers. Apple Inc., for example, has responded by raising prices on certain products like Macs and iPads due to rising memory and chip costs and is anticipated to increase prices for its upcoming new-generation iPhones, which the company plans to unveil at a September event.

The escalating competition among AI developers for cloud computing resources reflects the growing importance of such infrastructure in underpinning next-generation AI technologies, highlighting the strategic significance of supply chain management and capacity acquisition in the sector.
