A commemorative event was held in Berlin on Monday to mark the 82nd anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, during which a descendant of an anti-Nazi resistor sought to remove a wreath placed by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Tobias Korenke, the great-nephew of theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer—who opposed the Nazi regime and was executed for his resistance—tried to take down the wreath left by the AfD parliamentary group at the site where the main conspirators were executed following their plot against Hitler.

Security personnel intervened during the attempt, and in the resulting confrontation, the wreath was damaged. Korenke expressed strong disapproval of the AfD’s participation in the memorial ceremony, stating that many descendants of Nazi regime opponents, himself included, are angered by the party’s actions and will not accept them.

The attempted assassination, led by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg on July 20, 1944, involved a briefcase bomb planted during a meeting at Hitler’s headquarters. The plot ultimately failed when the bomb was moved behind a table leg, which absorbed much of the blast’s force. Von Stauffenberg and other conspirators were executed hours later.

Despite the controversy, the National Day of Remembrance for Resistance Against the Nazi Regime proceeded as scheduled, featuring a speech by education minister Karin Prien. The event honored those who opposed the Nazi dictatorship and commemorated their efforts to overthrow it.
