Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo has expressed confidence in Ghana’s prospects at this year’s World Cup, emphasizing the team’s ambition to produce surprising results. The 26-year-old striker, who joined City from Bournemouth in a £65 million transfer this January, believes the Black Stars have the talent to advance beyond the group stage and potentially make a deeper tournament run.
Ghana began their campaign in Group L with a late victory over Panama and will face England this Tuesday in a key match that could determine their progression to the knockout rounds. Semenyo acknowledged that injuries have affected the squad, sidelining some important players, but maintained that the team remains strong and competitive.
“We believe that we can cause some upsets ourselves,” Semenyo said, highlighting both the quality and resilience within the squad. “It is going to be a tough group and the first target is to get out of that. But we back ourselves against any team, so if we can get into the knockout stages then who knows how far we can go?”
Reflecting on Ghana’s previous World Cup performance, Semenyo described their last appearance as disappointing, with the team failing to advance past the group phase. This time, the forward said the team aims to improve on that result and make an impact on the global stage.
“I’m just looking forward to playing more minutes on the biggest stage,” he added, underlining his personal motivation alongside the team’s collective goals.
Ghana’s upcoming fixture against England will be closely watched, as both sides compete for valuable points in a group widely regarded as challenging. The Black Stars’ ability to navigate these matches will be crucial to fulfilling their aspirations in the tournament hosted in North America.
