Manchester City’s Antoine Semenyo expressed confidence in Ghana’s chances of causing upsets at this summer’s World Cup as the Black Stars prepare for crucial group stage matches in North America. Ghana kicked off their campaign in Group L with a last-minute victory over Panama and are set to face England on Tuesday in Boston, a game that could prove pivotal in securing progression to the knockout rounds.
The 26-year-old winger, who joined Manchester City in January for a reported £65 million from Bournemouth, acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized the depth of talent within the squad despite some key absences due to injury. “It is going to be a tough group and the first target is to get out of that, but we back ourselves against any team," Semenyo said. "If we can get into the knockout stages, then who knows how far we can go?”
Semenyo reflected on Ghana’s performance in the previous World Cup, describing their failure to advance beyond the group stage as disappointing. His aim, he said, is to earn more playing time on football’s biggest stage and help the team improve on that past showing.
Following their match against England in Boston, Ghana will travel to Philadelphia for their final group fixture against Croatia. Semenyo highlighted the pressure that comes with representing the Black Stars and the expectations of passionate fans. “Every time we pull on the Black Stars jersey, we are representing our nation. We all know what it means to put on that Black Stars shirt,” he said. “The fans are so passionate. If you give the ball away a few times and don’t get the win, people are going to have something to say. That’s just how it is and we accept that.”
Despite the scrutiny, Semenyo described the pressure as a privilege and a motivating force. “It’s what inspires us all to keep improving," he added. "Every time I go out there, I just want to do my best and make the country proud.”
In addition to his football career, Semenyo recently became the Global Brand Ambassador for Ahmad Tea, a family-owned company known worldwide for its quality and commitment to sustainability.
