Aaron Donald’s potential return to the Los Angeles Rams hinges largely on his physical readiness after two seasons away from professional football. While the defensive star has yet to formally announce an end to his retirement, sources indicate progress toward a comeback is underway.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Donald is evaluating whether his body can meet the high standards he set during his career, widely regarded as one of the most outstanding defensive runs in NFL history. “He wants to make sure that he can go out and do it before he fully commits,” Rapoport said, noting that the situation appears to be moving in the direction of a return.
The 35-year-old has been actively training and was recently observed working out at the Rams’ facility, gauging his condition after an extended absence from the sport. Sources familiar with the situation conveyed similar optimism to the California Post, indicating that while the team does not have a set timeline for Donald’s decision, an official announcement is unlikely before mid to late August.
Rams head coach Sean McVay recently described Donald’s status as “trending upwards” and suggested that the team would gain more clarity following their transition from Loyola Marymount University to the Woodland Hills practice facility. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer added that Donald and McVay have discussed a potential return and developed a preliminary timeline, though the player is not expected to participate in the current phase of training camp. According to Breer, “everything’s in play” for the period following this initial phase.
Despite uncertainty over Donald’s timing, the Rams possess considerable depth along the defensive line, enabling them to remain patient. Should Donald rejoin the roster, he would share playing time with defensive standouts such as Myles Garrett, Kobie Turner, and Byron Young. This rotation could allow Donald to maintain a significant impact even if his snap count is initially limited.
As the Rams await a formal decision, Donald’s return remains contingent on his evaluation of his physical capabilities and readiness to perform at the elite level he has long exemplified.
