Federal authorities are investigating an incident involving the apparent assault of a sea lion in San Diego after a video showing a man striking the animal circulated online, prompting public outrage and condemnation from local officials. The footage, which surfaced on social media, depicts a man pursuing and kicking a sea lion at Point La Jolla, a well-known coastal area frequented by visitors to observe the marine mammals. Another individual is heard laughing in the background of the video.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Law Enforcement confirmed it is reviewing the video and examining whether any violations of federal law occurred. Sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), which prohibits actions such as harassment, harm, pursuit, feeding, capture, injury, restraint, or killing of these animals. Violations can result in significant fines or imprisonment.
