A call has been made to the Malaysian government to consider increasing pensions for retired civil servants in the upcoming Budget 2027. The appeal emphasizes the financial challenges pensioners face amid rising living costs and urges a review of the current pension scheme to ensure retirees can maintain a decent standard of living.
Associate Professor Dr. Mahendran Maniam of Inti International University, based in Nilai, Negri Sembilan, highlighted the years of service and dedication provided by civil servants who have contributed significantly to the development and welfare of the country. He noted that many pensioners continue to support family members, including children, grandchildren, spouses, and elderly relatives, while managing fixed pension incomes that may not adequately cover increasing expenses for essentials such as food, utilities, transportation, housing, and healthcare.
Dr. Mahendran acknowledged prior government efforts to improve pensioner welfare but urged that Budget 2027 presents an opportunity to systematically reassess the adequacy of current pension payments. He stressed that adjustments reflecting inflation and rising living costs would help alleviate financial pressures and enhance the security and dignity of retired civil servants.
“Retirees are not merely recipients of public funds; they are former public servants who have contributed to the nation throughout their working lives,” Dr. Mahendran said in his appeal. He called on the Prime Minister and the relevant ministries to implement a fair and meaningful pension adjustment, particularly for those who depend heavily on their monthly pensions for basic expenses.
The appeal also underscored the symbolic importance of recognizing the contributions of retired government employees, suggesting that a suitable increase in pensions would demonstrate the government’s ongoing commitment to their welfare. Dr. Mahendran concluded that valuing the nation’s workforce should include ensuring that former public servants are able to live their retirement years with dignity and without undue financial concern.
With Budget 2027 scheduled for consideration in the coming months, pensioners and their advocates alike await decisions on whether adjustments will be made to address the financial needs of Malaysia’s retired civil servants.
