Apple on Monday announced significant advancements in its artificial intelligence capabilities, spotlighting an upgraded version of its Siri voice assistant as the company aims to narrow the gap with competitors in the AI arena. The updates were revealed during Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) held at the company’s Silicon Valley headquarters, attracting developers from approximately 65 countries.
Introduced in 2011, Siri has historically lagged behind other voice assistants, drawing criticism even from Apple enthusiasts. The new iteration is described by Apple as a "much more capable assistant," designed to assist users more effectively across multiple Apple devices. Among its enhanced functions, Siri can now compile menus, collect recipes from the web or personal text messages, and coordinate social gatherings, such as inviting friends from a group chat for events like a World Cup viewing party.
The WWDC, primarily focused on software and developer tools, was also notable as the final one featuring CEO Tim Cook, who plans to step down in September and pass leadership to John Ternus. Cook acknowledged the milestone with an extended standing ovation, expressing gratitude for his tenure and optimistic about the future energy surrounding Apple’s platforms.
In framing its AI initiatives, Apple underscored a strong emphasis on privacy and practical application rather than chasing speculative or experimental forms of artificial intelligence. Craig Federighi, Apple’s software chief, indirectly critiqued other AI firms by cautioning against developing AI “for the sake of AI” without clear benefits to users. He stressed Apple’s philosophy that AI must be user-centered, focused on integrating seamlessly into everyday products while safeguarding personal data.
Apple also highlighted updates to its Apple Intelligence system, first introduced earlier this year. The platform now incorporates Google’s Gemini AI model to enhance its functionalities. Crucially, processing of user requests occurs locally on devices or securely on the cloud, ensuring data remains inaccessible to unauthorized parties.
Unlike broader industry trends emphasizing AI superintelligence or companion chatbots, Apple’s approach prioritizes tangible improvements to user experience through AI-driven assistance, security, and privacy protections embedded directly within its ecosystem.
