Wests Tigers winger Jahream Bula has committed his future to the club by signing a four-year contract extension, rejecting speculation linking him to other teams. The 24-year-old secured the new deal a week after teammate Jarome Luai announced his move to Papua New Guinea, moving to end concerns about a potential player exodus from Concord.
Bula revealed that he had already decided to stay well before Luai’s news broke, emphasizing his confidence in the Tigers’ direction and culture. “I was pretty set on my decision,” Bula said. “We’ve still got him [Luai] for the next 18 months, and we’re so happy to have him here for that period of time. We know he’ll give us his best.”
Earlier this year, Bula took a self-imposed break from social media to limit distractions while contemplating one of the most significant contracts of his career. He credited his family, faith, and personal reflection with helping him make a clear-headed decision. “At the end of the day, I’m happy with my decision. I’m confident that staying at the Tigers is the best thing for me and my family,” he said.
Bula’s resolve to remain with the club marks a turnaround from the early part of his career, which involved two wooden spoons in his opening seasons and uncertainty about the club’s prospects. This season, the Tigers have shown marked improvement with five wins so far—already surpassing their total victories from his rookie year. Bula cited the team’s enhanced chemistry, trust, and culture as key factors behind their progress. “The past few years, they were usually 50/50 games, and even then, we’d usually lose them. But this year, there’s a lot of trust and connection in the team. The culture’s been good, so yeah, I’m enjoying it,” he explained.
The contract follows a series of long-term signings by the Tigers, who recently extended deals for players including Terrell May, Taylan May, Alex Twal, Adam Doueihi, and Sione Fainu. The club is reportedly also aiming to retain Talatau Amone and Samuela Fainu.
Unlike his previous contract, which included multiple options and exit clauses, Bula’s new deal is straightforward and without any built-in escapes. “I didn’t want to deal with all that sort of stuff,” he said. “I just wanted to be committed for however long I signed for. Not having any options to get out or anything, I’ll just keep giving my best foot forward for the four years that I’m here.”
Bula expressed confidence that the Tigers have the talent and capability to contend for a premiership during the tenure of his contract, even with Luai’s impending departure. “We’ve got the players to do it, we’ve got the skills to do it, and I think we’ve shown it against some of the best teams,” he added.
