Apple has announced significant updates to its desktop computer lineup, unveiling upgraded versions of the Mac mini and Mac Studio set to launch later this month.

The refreshed Mac mini now features Apple’s new M6 chip, enhancing performance across a range of applications, including artificial intelligence tasks, video editing, and gaming. The compact device also benefits from faster storage options, improved graphics capabilities, and the integration of Wi-Fi 7 technology, which is aimed at providing smoother streaming and quicker download speeds. The base model comes equipped with 16GB of unified memory, with an option to increase to 32GB for users requiring additional processing power. Despite the performance improvements, Apple has maintained the same small form factor and has added front-facing ports for easier connection of peripherals like phones, mice, headphones, and keyboards, complemented by additional ports on the back.

However, the new Mac mini carries a higher price point compared to previous models. The entry-level M6 Mac mini starts at £899, up from the former £599 starting price, a change attributed in part to ongoing global memory shortages. For customers seeking even greater capabilities, Apple will offer an M5 Pro variant of the Mac mini, beginning at £1,699.

Pre-orders for the updated Mac mini are currently available, with the devices expected to be in stores from September 22.

In addition to the Mac mini, Apple has introduced a refreshed Mac Studio workstation featuring the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. These updates significantly boost processing power, with the company claiming certain tasks can be completed more than ten times faster than on previous models. The Mac Studio update also includes faster storage solutions and an extensive array of professional-grade connectivity options, catering to demanding workflows.

The Mac Studio’s pricing reflects its high-end specifications, starting at £2,499 for the M5 Max model and reaching £5,499 for the M5 Ultra configuration.
