Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the long-absent Kwik-E-Mart owner from the animated series *The Simpsons*, returned to Springfield in the episode aired on October 18. This marks the character's first appearance in nearly a decade after a controversy surrounding his portrayal and the decision to no longer have the character voiced by a white actor.
The episode, titled *The Revengening*, is part of the show’s annual Halloween-themed *Treehouse of Horror* anthology. In it, Apu makes a dramatic comeback, confronting the residents of Springfield. He declares, "You thought you could just get rid of me? That I’d disappear? That there wouldn’t be consequences for the horrible thing you did?" The character’s return has sparked renewed attention to the discussions that led to his absence.
Originally voiced by Hank Azaria, a white actor, Apu’s character was known for his exaggerated Indian accent and catchphrase, "Thank you. Come again." The role became a focal point for debate about racial stereotyping and representation in Hollywood. In 2017, comedian Hari Kondabolu, who is of South Asian descent, released a documentary called *The Problem With Apu*. In it, Kondabolu argued that the character embodied a problematic stereotype that contributed to the marginalization and misrepresentation of South Asians in the entertainment industry.
Supporters of Apu have described the character as a positive symbol of immigrant success and part of *The Simpsons*’ broad satirical scope that lampoons various groups. Critics, however, have maintained that the character perpetuated harmful clichés and that having a white actor voice him underscored the industry's lack of diversity in casting South Asian roles.
In the latest episode, Apu is voiced by Sunil Malhotra, whose previous work includes roles in *Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi* and *The Legend of Vox Machina*. Malhotra acknowledged mixed feelings upon receiving the role, describing it as initially unsettling but also intriguing. According to Kondabolu, the show’s move to hire South Asian actors for the character represents a thoughtful response to longstanding criticism. He expressed hope that this decision might help end much of the sustained backlash he has personally experienced over the years.
The return of Apu with a new voice actor highlights ongoing conversations in the entertainment industry about representation, cultural sensitivity, and the responsibilities of creators in portraying diverse communities.
