Archivist became the first horse trained and owned by Qatar to win the Coral Golden Mile, held as part of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. The four-year-old colt, carrying the colours of the Emir of Qatar’s Wathnan Racing, was trained by Hamad Al Jehani, who previously established himself as a champion trainer in Qatar before moving to Newmarket.

Starting at odds of 16-1 from stall 20, Archivist was ridden by jockey Callum Rodriguez, who opted for a wide course to avoid congestion on the inside. This strategy proved effective, allowing the horse to carry the top weight into the final furlong and secure victory by a one-length margin over runner-up Cerulean Bay.

Prior to this race, Archivist had finished 20th out of 28 in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, where he was the 5-1 favourite. Al Jehani noted that the horse struggled with the straight mile at Ascot but performs better on a course with bends, which he said helps the horse maintain comfort and rhythm during the race. Al Jehani acknowledged that the wide draw was not ideal, pointing out that only two of the previous ten winners had drawn higher than stall five. Nevertheless, the trainer adapted his approach, focusing on finding a winning strategy from the outside gate.

Rodriguez commented on the draw, admitting initial concerns but later recognizing that the wide stall allowed for a smooth, uninterrupted run around the course, which contributed to the winning effort.

Archivist joins Silver Lake as another successful horse racing under the Wathnan Racing banner at the Qatar Goodwood Festival. Silver Lake, trained previously by William Haggas—Al Jehani’s neighbour in Newmarket—secured a win in the British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Handicap under jockey Saffie Osborne as the 4-5 favourite, reinforcing Wathnan Racing’s prominence at the event.
