Arqit Quantum Inc, Es’hailSat, and Advanced International Electronic Equipment Company (AIEE) have jointly demonstrated quantum-safe encryption within an operational satellite communications environment, marking a key advancement in securing critical infrastructure against emerging quantum computing threats.

The demonstration, conducted at Es’hailSat’s Tier-4 certified Teleport facility in Doha, integrated Arqit’s quantum-safe encryption technology into live satellite operations. Utilizing the Es’hail-1 satellite positioned at 25.5/26° East, the test showed that quantum-resilient cryptographic protection could be deployed without disrupting existing systems, services, or operational performance. AIEE led the systems integration and interoperability testing across the ground and network infrastructure supporting the demonstration.

The project highlights a method for satellite operators and critical infrastructure providers—spanning government, enterprise, maritime, energy, and other sensitive sectors—to reinforce their communications against vulnerabilities posed by advancing quantum computing capabilities. Maintaining operational continuity remains a priority, especially for sectors where system reliability is essential.

Andy Leaver, CEO of Arqit Quantum Inc, emphasized the significance of introducing quantum-safe cryptography without requiring a complete overhaul of current infrastructure. “That operational reality matters especially in critical infrastructure environments, where disruption simply isn’t an option,” he noted.

Ali Al Kuwari, President and CEO of Es’hailSat, underlined the importance of the initiative for Qatar and the wider Middle East and North Africa region. He described Es’hailSat’s satellite networks as critical to the country’s national infrastructure and digital transformation efforts. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to exploring technologies that can strengthen long-term communications resilience while maintaining operational continuity for customers and stakeholders operating critical services,” Al Kuwari stated.

Adam St Paul, Chief Technology Officer of AIEE, added that the demonstration proved existing satellite systems can be upgraded to enhance security against increasingly sophisticated threats, including those from state and non-state actors. “By introducing quantum-safe protection into operational environments, satellite operators and critical infrastructure providers can ensure their communications remain resilient while maintaining the continuity and reliability upon which their operations depend,” he said.

This successful demonstration lays groundwork for the broader deployment of quantum-safe satellite communications, aiming to support secure enterprise connectivity, safeguard sovereign communications, and protect critical infrastructure in the long term. The collaboration underscores the growing focus within the satellite industry on addressing the cybersecurity challenges associated with the advent of quantum computing technology.
