Arrest rates linked to football-related incidents in England and Wales have risen during the current World Cup compared to recent major tournaments, according to UK football policing officials.

As of Monday, 88 individuals have been apprehended in connection with football-related offenses, a figure notably higher than the 66 arrests recorded during the UEFA European Championship in 2024 and the 56 arrests at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU), led by Chief Constable Mark Roberts, reported a total of 463 football-related incidents throughout the group stages of the competition. This number significantly exceeds the 304 incidents documented during Euro 2024 and the 291 during the previous World Cup.

The recorded incidents include 162 occurrences within licensed premises and 109 domestic incidents, highlighting the varied settings in which disturbances have taken place. Despite the increase in incidents and arrests in England and Wales, Roberts noted that the conduct of England fans abroad has been commendable, particularly during matches in the United States.

Roberts described the upward trend in domestic incidents as "disappointing," underscoring challenges faced by policing teams in managing football-related behavior as the tournament progresses. The UKFPU continues to monitor the situation closely while coordinating efforts to minimize disruption and ensure public safety during this high-profile international event.
