Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has confirmed his fitness ahead of England’s World Cup knockout stages, dispelling concerns over his recent injury setbacks. Rice missed England’s final group match against Panama due to a calf injury, alongside ongoing issues with his back and hamstring that previously required him to wear compression socks.
Despite the series of physical setbacks, Rice affirmed he is ready to contribute as England progresses in the tournament. “There’s been one niggle over my hamstring, which has been an issue, but that’s not a problem because I’m still here training, I’m playing. I’m fine,” he stated.
Rice detailed the calf injury that occurred during the closing moments of England’s match against Ghana, describing it as an unfortunate incident that caused discomfort for several days. “I got a dead calf in the last minute of the Ghana game. It literally blew up for like three days, so that was just unlucky,” he explained.
The 27-year-old midfielder emphasized his ongoing efforts to manage his condition effectively and expressed his commitment to the team’s success. “I’m managing myself really well. I feel good, fit and strong,” Rice noted. He also expressed willingness to sit out certain matches if it benefits the team’s overall performance. “For the good of the team I don’t mind missing out the odd game just for other players to play. I’m fine with that, as long as we keep going and winning matches.”
Rice’s absence in the final group stage allowed Morgan Rogers to feature, providing an opportunity for squad rotation as England enters the more demanding knockout phase of the tournament. With Rice declaring himself fit, England’s midfield options look to remain strong as they aim to advance further in the competition.
