Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay have been exchanging insights on managing the challenges following a title-winning season. Both teams fall under the ownership of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment (KSE), facilitating ongoing communication between the two coaches.
After leading the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in 2021, McVay’s team experienced a significant downturn, finishing with the worst record of his tenure the following year. Arteta, whose Arsenal secured their first league title in 22 years this past May, aims to avoid a similar regression as he prepares for the upcoming season.
Kevin Demoff, KSE’s executive vice president, highlighted the value of the relationship between Arteta and McVay in navigating the pressures that come with sustaining success. “Our worst year with the Rams was the year after we won the Super Bowl and Sean kind of hit rock bottom,” Demoff said. “He and Mikel have talked about that. How do you get through that year when you finally break through and win—that relief? Then how do you translate that into the next year when you have to push your club again and not let that one title define you?”
Squad management emerged as a critical aspect of maintaining momentum post-championship. Arsenal faced some backlash following the transfer of winger Gabriel Martinelli to Saudi club Al-Hilal during the summer transfer window. Demoff acknowledged that retaining all players from a title-winning roster is often impractical. “You can’t keep all your players after you win a title,” he remarked. “How do you respond to the fan narrative ‘these are the guys who won you a title’? But you need to move on from them to grow.”
By sharing experiences and strategies, both coaches are working to ensure their teams remain competitive and continue building on their recent accomplishments. The collaboration underscores the unique advantage of a shared ownership structure, allowing for cross-sport dialogue on maintaining success in highly competitive environments.
