Arsenal's reserve squad demonstrated their strength with a convincing 4-2 victory over Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup, a competition often dominated by clubs with extensive squad depth. The match, held at Portman Road, saw Mikel Arteta field a heavily rotated Arsenal side featuring nine changes from the previous lineup, yet still included high-profile players such as Bruno Guimarães, Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyokeres, as well as World Cup winners Martín Zubimendi and Mikel Merino.

The standout performer was 16-year-old Max Dowman, who scored both of Arsenal’s opening goals. This was Dowman’s first appearance of the season and his first goals since a memorable strike against Everton six months ago. His early opener came in the seventh minute, a composed finish that exposed Ipswich’s defensive frailties and set the tone for a dominant Arsenal display. Dowman later added a second goal, slotting the ball into the far corner with precision, further bolstering claims that he is ready to step up to senior-level competition.

Noni Madueke and Merino added Arsenal’s second and fourth goals, contributing to a controlled, largely untroubled performance. Despite the final scoreline, Arsenal conceded twice, highlighting rare defensive lapses for the season but not undermining their superiority throughout the match.

Arteta praised Dowman’s performance but tempered expectations regarding the teenager’s readiness for the Premier League’s physical demands. “You don’t see the players with the capacity to handle just the physicality of the game. Not only that, but the demands that you have to put your body through in the week to be able to be in a good condition to compete,” Arteta said. “But he’s doing it and he’s doing it really well.”

Another promising talent was Marli Salmon, who recently turned 17 and played centrally alongside Gabriel. Salmon displayed encouraging ball-playing ability yet faced learning moments, particularly in managing when to engage or hold back, drawing advice from senior players Merino and Gabriel during the second half.

Ipswich, who also made numerous changes, struggled to contain Arsenal’s attacking threat and were often exposed defensively. Manager Gary O’Neil acknowledged the challenge but remained focused on the league, where Ipswich have recorded two wins in four games. “We found a way to fight our way back into it,” O’Neil commented. “Losing by two goals to them isn’t a dreadful effort.”

With a strong squad and emerging youth prospects like Dowman and Salmon, Arsenal appear well-positioned to mount a serious challenge in this season’s Carabao Cup, following a competition traditionally dominated by clubs with deep rosters such as Manchester City.
