Alice Oldland, an accomplished artist, nurse, and entrepreneur, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2026, at the Grace Home in Lennoxville, Quebec. She was 83 years old.
Born Alice Tascona on February 11, 1943, in Angus, Ontario, Oldland was the third of five children in the family of Joseph and Edna Tascona. After World War II, her family relocated to Barrie, where she spent her formative years. She trained as a nurse at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto before earning a diploma in Public Health from McGill University. Returning to Toronto, she worked as a public health nurse with the Victorian Order of Nurses.
Alice met John Oldland in Toronto, and the couple married in Barrie in April 1969. She left full-time nursing after becoming pregnant with their first son but continued her education by completing a Fine Art degree at the Ontario College of Art & Design while raising her three sons—Christopher, Nicholas, and Jeremy.
Combining her medical knowledge and artistic skills, Oldland worked as a medical artist at Hamilton General Hospital. In 1984, the family moved to North Hatley, Quebec, following John Oldland’s appointment as a professor at Bishop’s University.
In North Hatley, Alice and her close friend Gill Côté opened a gift shop and art gallery. There, she began hand-painting aprons with original designs, initially creating pieces for local customers and visitors. The aprons’ popularity led John to produce them on a larger scale, marking the foundation of the Hatley clothing brand. Over the next eight years, Alice extended her artistic vision to items such as boxer shorts and sleepshirts, infusing each with her distinctive style and humor.
By 1999, her three sons assumed control of the business, which has since developed into one of Canada’s prominent children’s clothing brands. However, the company’s early growth was rooted in Oldland’s creative concepts and designs.
Alice Oldland is survived by her husband, John Oldland; their three sons; and their families, including grandchildren. A memorial ceremony is scheduled for October 9, 2026, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Barrie, Ontario.
