A 19-year-old suspect already out on bail in a separate felony case has been charged with the fatal stabbing of a Northern California artist and gallery manager in a seemingly random attack, according to court documents.
Tyler Leibelt allegedly killed 73-year-old Rachell Summers on Monday outside the Capitola Mall in Santa Cruz County as she walked to the bank after collecting her paycheck. Prosecutors filing the case said the suspect admitted to harboring homicidal urges and had planned the attack in advance. Leibelt’s arraignment has been postponed to July 29 at the request of his attorneys. He remains held without bail.
Summers was widely known and respected in the local arts community, having served for seven years as the gallery manager at Art of Santa Cruz. Heather Richman, president of the gallery and a longtime colleague of Summers, described her as a key figure who brought organization and stability to the gallery’s operations. The killing has deeply affected both the art scene and the broader community.
According to the court filings, Leibelt was residing in a sober living facility and attended Cabrillo College, where he is studying accounting. On the day of the attack, he took an Uber to campus before boarding a METRO bus to Capitola Mall. Prosecutors said he admitted in interviews that while at the college cafeteria, he felt a persistent desire to kill someone, confirming to investigators that once he turned off his cellphone, he was determined to carry out the murder without interruption.
Surveillance and court documents indicate Leibelt purchased two switchblade knives at a nearby sporting goods store, intending to wield one in each hand. During police questioning, he reportedly demonstrated stabbing motions with both hands. He had previously disclosed homicidal fantasies to authorities but had repeatedly been released from custody.
Prosecutors allege that Leibelt first considered attacking an elderly man crossing the street but refrained due to traffic and concerns the individual might resist. Leibelt then approached Summers near the mall entrance, following her covertly with a concealed knife. He allowed her to walk ahead before suddenly chasing and stabbing her from behind.
Summers sustained more than 11 stab wounds, including injuries to her back, defensive wounds on her arms, and chest trauma. According to prosecutors, Leibelt told investigators he heard Summers cry out for help during the assault.
The case has intensified criticism of California’s criminal justice system, with some community members and officials questioning how Leibelt was free on bail while awaiting trial for a separate felony matter. Authorities have emphasized their commitment to preventing further violence as the investigation continues.
