Performing at award shows presents a distinct set of challenges and opportunities for musicians, as reflected by artists who participated in the previous Radio Kantipur National Music Awards in Kathmandu. Kuma Sagar, Asmita Adhikari, and Sushant KC shared insights into their pre-show routines, memorable experiences, and the significance of performing on such a prominent platform.
Kuma Sagar and his band begin each performance with a communal ritual, reciting a praise for “maa” to ground themselves and foster positive energy. “Before we go up on the stage, we gather around to recite a praise aloud, ‘bramhayeni mai ki jay,’ to boost each other and leave every emotion behind,” Sagar explained. For Adhikari, the ritual is a personal and internal process involving deep breathing and self-affirmation to build confidence and calm nerves. Sushant KC and his band opt for a group hug followed by a motivational talk from a member, fostering unity and focus before taking the stage.
The previous Radio Kantipur awards, broadcast live through KMG’s platforms, added an extra layer of pressure. Sagar recalled initial nerves but emphasized the support among bandmates and gratitude for the opportunity. “We were nervous, especially at first, since it was a live broadcast, but it was our moment, so we cheered each other up and thanked god,” he said. For all three artists, the moment they stepped onto the stage transformed nervousness into joy and focus.
Each artist highlighted different standout moments from the event. Sagar described the announcement of his band as winners as a powerful experience, underlining their collective journey. Adhikari spoke about the honor of performing a tribute to Sambhujeet Baskota, an event she cherished deeply. KC’s most memorable moment came from entering the venue through the audience, moving through the crowd while singing and engaging directly with listeners, an experience he said was uniquely intimate.
Performing at an awards show requires a different approach than concerts, which often allow for more spontaneity and crowd energy. Sagar noted the presence of respected musicians was both intimidating and inspiring, motivating his band toward excellence. KC emphasized that the seated audience demanded a balanced performance—energetic yet composed, unlike his usual high-energy concerts. Adhikari expressed more concern about technical logistics, such as sound adjustments and last-minute changes, rather than performance anxiety.
All three artists agreed that these performances contribute to their growth. Sagar highlighted the importance of remaining calm and positive, allowing the band to connect deeply with audiences. KC pointed out the challenge of tempering his energy to suit the award show environment, while Adhikari noted that every stage teaches new lessons and builds confidence.
Looking ahead, the artists offered advice to this year’s Radio Kantipur National Music Awards performers. Sagar encouraged embracing each opportunity on stage to strengthen confidence and passion. Adhikari urged artists to enjoy the moment and trust their preparation, while KC advised simply to be authentic and remember to have fun during every performance.
