Qatar has launched a new initiative allowing high school graduates from the literacy and humanities track to pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), fields that were previously inaccessible to them. The program, announced jointly by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) and the Academic Bridge Program, a member of Qatar Foundation, introduces an accredited preparatory year designed to equip humanities students with the foundational knowledge and skills needed for scientific disciplines.
The preparatory year focuses on academic fundamentals including English-language proficiency, mathematics, core sciences such as biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as computing and programming. Its curriculum aligns with entry requirements for both local and international universities, facilitating a smoother transition into demanding fields such as medicine, engineering, computer science, and natural sciences. Significantly, the academic credits earned during this preparatory year will be recognized by several prominent universities inside and outside Qatar, allowing students to integrate this coursework into their broader university programs.
Assistant Undersecretary for Higher Education Affairs Dr. Hareb Mohamed al-Jabri highlighted the initiative as a strategic measure that broadens academic options and channels students towards scientific specializations critical to the country’s development goals. He linked the scheme to Qatar’s ambition of building a knowledge-based and innovation-driven economy by preparing qualified national talent in priority sectors.
Dr. Saheim Khalaf al-Tamimi, Director of the Academic Bridge Program, emphasized the collaboration as a demonstration of commitment to flexible and comprehensive educational pathways. He noted that the program equips students with the necessary competencies to successfully advance into university-level STEM studies.
Eligibility requirements for applicants include holding a high school diploma with a minimum grade of 70 percent, submitting an IELTS certificate or equivalent with a score of at least 4.5, and passing placement tests in English and mathematics before completing formal admission.
This initiative forms part of MoEHE’s broader strategy to develop innovative and adaptable routes through higher education that meet evolving labor market demands. It supports Qatar National Vision 2030 by fostering a generation prepared to compete in key economic sectors and contribute to the nation’s growth.
